White sage
White sage (Salvia apiana) grows on the west coast of North America in the wild, at about a meter to a meter and a half. Its elongated leaves are densely covered with soft silvery-gray hair, thanks to which white sage got its name.
Long before the settlement of America, Native Americans worshiped sage as the most sacred herb for its many healing and cleansing benefits. Dried and bundled, sage was a common companion during various ceremonies, celebrations and rituals. Edible seeds were often used as part of traditional dishes and leaves and roots were prepared by shamans for strengthening tonics and medicinal teas.
Burning dried aromatic leaves serves for ritual purification of people and places, it protects against negative energies, maintains a calm atmosphere, helps to find the right way of life and promotes communication and memory. The smoke also has disinfectant and repellent effects. The aroma is clear, spicy and slightly sweet.
Use: Carefully ignite the bundle of sage at the end and let it burn for a few seconds. Then blow out the flame, let the bundle smolder and place it safely on a non-flammable surface. We let the smoke rise freely, or we can walk with the bundle throughout the space that we want to cleanse. After the ritual, we can cut off the smoldering end and let it burn out or extinguish it. The rest of the bundle can be used for another ritual. The bundle is intended for as described purposes only.
